The source of the Tone River is Mt. Oominakami, one of the Mikuni Mountains in northern Gunma Prefecture. The Tone River flows from this mountainous area to the Kanto Plain through almost the prefecture's centre, with Japan's most significant catchment area supporting daily life and industry. The forests upstream are home to various small creatures, and the water produced by the rich forests nurtures marine life.

Gunma University wants to be the source of knowledge. Therefore, like a SUIGEN, the birth of a river supplying water circulating forests, rivers, and the sea, we will conduct research, education, regional cooperation, industrial collaboration, and social contribution leading to innovations.
